To edit, you must "Check Out" a story. This locks it so designers cannot change text while you are editing. Once done, you "Check In" to save changes and unlock it. View Modes:
If a user crashes, the file may remain checked out. You may need to use the "Cancel Checkout" feature (usually requires administrator rights on the assignment file) to free it.
