Set in the Austro-Hungarian Empire just before World War I, the story follows Anton Hofmiller, a young cavalry officer who commits a social blunder by asking a girl to dance, unaware she is paralyzed. Paralyzed by his own guilt, Hofmiller begins visiting her, but his "pity" soon morphs into a suffocating trap.
