The is a foundational piece of U.S. federal legislation enacted in 1974 to address child maltreatment. It provides a national framework and federal funding to help states improve their child protective services (CPS) and prevention efforts. Core Purpose and Function
CAPTA establishes national definitions for child abuse and neglect and assigns the federal government key responsibilities in data collection, research, and technical assistance.
To receive these grants, states must enact laws requiring professionals (like teachers, doctors, and social workers) to report suspected maltreatment to CPS.
