The lives and challenges of transgender individuals in Southeast Asia, including those referred to as ladyboys or kathoey, are complex and multifaceted. This review highlights the need for more research, policy attention, and social support to address the social, economic, and health challenges faced by transgender individuals in Southeast Asia.

The term "ladyboys" is often used to refer to transgender women in this region. However, this term can be stigmatizing and does not accurately reflect the diversity of experiences within this community. In Thailand, for example, there is no specific law that addresses the rights of transgender individuals.
