Lassie Come Home (1943) -
The Carraclough family desperately tries to nurse the dying dog. Soon, the Duke of Rudling arrives at their cottage, having tracked Lassie's incredible journey. Joe's parents brace themselves to give the dog back one last time.
She grows thin, her magnificent coat becomes matted with mud, and her paws bleed from the rocky terrain.
She is shot at by fearful shepherds and hunted by dog catchers.
Months pass. Back in Yorkshire, the winter chill has set in. Joe has given up hope, believing he will never see his friend again.
Yet, she also encounters kindness. An elderly couple, the Foulds, take her in when she collapses on their doorstep, nursing her back to health. Though they grow fond of her, they realize she is driven by a higher purpose and let her go. She also travels for a time with Rowlie, a cheerful traveling peddler, and defends him fiercely from robbers.
