Years later, Pakhi lives alone in a cottage in Dalhousie, suffering from tuberculosis. Her father has passed away, and she has become a cynical writer, convinced she will die when the last leaf falls from the tree outside her window.
As Varun and Pakhi fall in love, he gains her father's trust, eventually convincing the Zamindar to let him handle the sale of the family's ancient artifacts. However, on the day of their wedding, Varun and his associates disappear, revealing they are a gang of professional thieves who have looted the family's entire fortune. The betrayal leaves Pakhi's father broken and her heart shattered.
In the film's poignant climax , Varun realizes the "last leaf" is Pakhi's only anchor to life. After a winter storm knocks the real leaf down, Varun secretly paints a leaf and ties it to the branch to deceive Pakhi into believing she still has time to live.
As Pakhi discovers the painted leaf and realizes Varun's ultimate act of love, Varun is cornered and fatally shot by the police in the surrounding forest. He dies having found redemption, and Pakhi is left with the strength to keep living.
