The quickest way to rate a transmission's health is by checking the fluid condition.
Check for "weeping" or active drips. If you see excessive RTV (silicone sealant) bulging out from the pan, it may have been applied too thickly, which can lead to internal clogs or external leaks.
Shifts should be firm but smooth. "Slipping" (engine RPMs rise but the car doesn't speed up) or "hunting" for gears indicates a failing unit.
