Meredith insists that Catherine tell Richard the truth, stating that her mother (Ellis Grey) hid her diagnosis and died alone, which she believes is not an excuse to push loved ones away.

Following this loss (and the death of his AA sponsor, Ollie), Richard breaks his sobriety streak, though not in the way expected. He goes to a "disgusting" bar that gives free shots for AA chips, but instead of drinking, he destroys the bar with a baseball bat.
