According to local folklore from the region, the name Shalakho is believed to have originated from entertainers and clowns. During their performances, they would place a piece of wood on an animal's back to simulate a heavy load, singing lyrics that repeated the word "şələ" (Azerbaijani for "a burden" or "load").
