Due to the wartime housing crunch, Connie Milligan (Jean Arthur) decides to sublet half of her apartment. She intends to find a female tenant, but instead gets talked into renting to a retired millionaire, Benjamin Dingle (Charles Coburn). Dingle, in turn, secretly sublets half of his half to a young soldier, Sgt. Joe Carter (Joel McCrea), who is waiting to be shipped overseas.
