Watch Black Mirror - S04e04 Hang The Dj Guide

This essay explores the themes of agency, technology, and human connection in the Black Mirror episode " Hang the DJ " (Season 4, Episode 4).

The narrative pivot occurs when Frank and Amy reunite and decide to stop checking their "Coach" devices for an expiry date. This act represents a reclaimed agency—an attempt to live in the moment rather than according to a schedule. However, when Frank secretly checks the timer and inadvertently causes the relationship's duration to plummet from five years to mere hours, the episode illustrates how obsession with technological certainty can poison genuine intimacy. In "Hang the DJ," Black Mirror presents a world governed by "The System," a pervasive dating algorithm that promises a 99.8% success rate in finding one's "ultimate compatible other". Through the journey of Frank and Amy, the episode critiques the modern reliance on technocratic solutions for deeply human mysteries like love, ultimately suggesting that true connection requires a rebellion against the very tools designed to facilitate it. This essay explores the themes of agency, technology,

The System functions by pairing individuals for fixed durations, ranging from hours to years. This mechanic effectively gamifies romance, stripping away the anxiety of choice but replacing it with a hollow, pre-ordained routine. Frank and Amy’s initial 12-hour encounter is marked by an immediate, effortless chemistry that contrasts sharply with the long, tedious relationships they are subsequently forced to endure. The algorithm posits that "everything happens for a reason," suggesting that bad dates are merely data points necessary to refine the final result. However, when Frank secretly checks the timer and

The "twist" reveals that the Frank and Amy we have followed are not real people, but one of 1,000 digital simulations (similar to "cookies" seen in other episodes) running simultaneously. The System defines "true love" not as compatibility, but as the willingness to rebel. By scaling the wall to escape the simulation, 998 pairs of Frank and Amy proved they would choose each other over the rules, resulting in the 99.8% match score seen by their real-world counterparts in the final scene.

  • Great overview of using plugins in Moodle !
I would just add, that when looking at a plugin to use, as well as the functionality and version compatibility, you MUST look at the release cycle, and developer. There is nothing worse that installing a plugin, building your site / course operation around this, to find that when you want to upgrade Moodle you can’t – because that plugin is no longer maintained 🙁
I’ve seen some Universities and other large Moodle installations becoming years out of date because they adopted a plugin that didn’t;t then get upgraded.
And this biggest impact with staying on an old and compatible version of Moodle means missing out on all the new features of Moodle core.
