The episode "Wish Upon a Shooting Star," known in the original 90s DiC dub as "Molly's Folly," is a pivotal turning point that shifts the series from a "monster-of-the-week" format toward a more complex, character-driven drama.
The DiC dub, produced by DiC Entertainment , made several distinct changes that altered the episode's tone:
A standout moment occurs when Molly literally stands between the Sailor Scouts and Nephlite, refusing to let them harm the man she loves. This act of defiance elevates her from a background victim to a hero in her own right, defined by her emotional conviction rather than magical powers. Dub vs. Original Context
This episode explores the bittersweet and controversial relationship between Molly (Naru) and the villainous Nephlite (Masato Sanjouin). While Nephlite initially manipulates Molly to find the Silver Crystal, he begins to feel an unfamiliar warmth—love—reacting to her pure heart through his Black Crystal.
The DiC version added emotional weight through localized dialogue, though it occasionally caused continuity errors—such as Molly calling Nephlite by his real name before she officially learned it.
Like many 90s dubs, it replaced the original score with synthesized music and added "hip" slang of the era to appeal to younger Western audiences.
